>> live and in hd, this is abc7 breaking news. captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- >> it appears that the spree by a former los angeles police officer is finally over. the cabin in which he was believed to be hiding is set ablaze and police have recovered a body believed to be that of dorner. this brings -- and the death toll has climbed. >> dorner was engaged in a shootout with officers shooting 2 and killing 1. jay korff has the latest. >> it has been estimated that hundreds of rounds of gunfire erupted during two separate shootouts during this deadly day. many questions remain. what we do know is this whole ordeal appears to be over. >> it is possible that the houses on fire.

>> the manhunt for christopher dorner took a dramatic turn when smoke-filled the sides of the san bernardino mountains. the cabin where dorner barricaded himself was in flames. police fired tear gas into the structure. reportedly, the body recovered late tuesday is believed to be dorner. this tense standoff came at a cost. one deputy was killed in an earlier shootout with dorner at the cabin. >> if it is christopher dorner, he is now responsible for the murder of four people. >> police say dorner fled a different cabin after holding two women hostage. he took off in a stolen vehicle. a short time later, wildlife wardens engaged him in a shootout. the barrage was caught by a local tv crew. no one was hurt in that exchange. swat teams poured into the region hoping to capture dorner,

the disgruntled former lapd officer accused of killing three earlier this month as retaliation. >> if he is watching this, enough is enough is time to turn yourself in and stop the bloodshed. >> it may take time before authorities are able to identify christopher dorner's body if he was the person inside the cabin gary we do not know if he took his own life or perished in the fire. police did say they heard one gunshot prior to the fire. >> thank you. more details now on the 10-day reign of terror. this began on february 3, when the bodies of keith lawrence and his fiancee, monica quan, were found in a car. quan was the daughter of a police captain who represented dorner in a hearing that led to his firing from the lapd. authorities also said that dorner wrote a manifesto that was posted on facebook.

police have provided protection for 50 families. >> closer to home tonight, we are on storm watch as we are monitoring the possibility of some snow for our region. this is less than 24 hours from now. let's go to bob ryan, tracking what we can expect. big changes from today. >> there are big changes. i know it is hard to believe. if some folks will be seeing a bit of wet snow. here is what is going on. many spots around 50 degrees. the roads are still mild. the only spot that is under a winter weather advisory is for your friends way out in the mountains in west virginia. a lot of snow around there, but not around here. no rain even.

students held a memorial for stephen rane . a look at how this has sent the university into shock. >> this kind of crime is virtually unheard of around the maryland community. one student still in the hospital. he will survive. 2 people dead, including the shooter tonight. students gathered at the chapel to remember and to mourn. >> tonight, maryland students are still stunned. around 100 came out for a vigil. many were friends of victims stephen rane. >> he was just so funny and brought this light with him. >> they say he was as kind as they come. >> he was a pretty great guy. >> the house where this shooting happened was just across university boulevard. if you can see the lights at the football stadium near it. evan heard gunshots across the street never imagining his

friend was a victim. police say around 1:00 a.m. shooter dayvon green lit fires in the backyard apparently to get his roommates outside. after they were outside, he shot both of them. one survived. rane did not. green then took his own life. his family says he battled mental illness. a source says he was still light -- a source says he was still legally able to buy a gun in silver spring. several students said rane took a class with them and stood out in a good way. he taught science students lessons about not sweating the small stuff. >> i would just look at him because he knew what was important. always smiling a matter what. >> police say the shooter had a bag with him that had a machete a baseball bat, and more ammunition in it. it also had an uzi rifle the

gun he bought in silver spring. he also had a handgun, which they believe he used in the shooting this morning. >> thank you very much. we turn to the story that impacts everyone in the nation and that is president obama's state of the union address. tonight, president obama laid down his blueprint for his second term. for a country that faces numerous obstacles in the immediate future, the economy is top of mind. in addition, the debate over gun control, immigration, and the military future in afghanistan sets -- took center stage. we begin with rebekah live in our newsroom. >> his first state of the union since reelection the president laid out his agenda for off a message of optimism. >> we can say with renewed confidence that the state of our union is stronger. >> acknowledging major challenges ahead as obama called

on congress to focus on the economy and helping the middle class, calling for investments in infrastructure, energy, education and manufacturing along with raising the minimum wage and help for homeowners. the president said it is time to raise taxes on the wealthy. >> why would we choose to make deeper cuts to education and medicare just to protect special interest tax breaks? how is that fair? >> he called the sequester a really bad idea. the president wants the parties to find a solution. >> let's agree to keep the people's government open and pay our bills on time and always uphold the full faith and credit of the united states of america. >> the president said it is time to fix immigration, u.s. immigration, and cyber security along with the gun violence. another victim of violent crime.

>> the families of newtown deserve a vote. the families of aurora deserve a vote. the families of oak creek, tucson, and the countless other communities deserve a simple vote. >> the republican response, marco rubio rejected the president's call for new government programs, saying the best way to help the economy is to reduce the size of the economy. >> his solution to every problem we face is for washington to tax more and spend more. that is an old idea that has failed every time we have tried. >> while the president has focused on domestic calls -- policy, he did call to end and in its involvement in afghanistan by 2014. he said afghanistan is a shadow -- al qaeda is a shadow of itself but still a threat.

>> breaking news with the situation involving christopher dorner. minutes ago, contrary to many reports, police are saying that a body was not found and police have not been able to go into the cabin where dorner was believed to be hiding out. that cabin was set on fire. police are saying that dorner is still alive and loose in the area. media reports out of los angeles said that police had recovered the body believed to be that of

dorner. we will keep you posted on the situation once we get more information. >> monitoring new developments from baltimore after a police department trainee was shot during a training exercise. a spokesman said the accident happened this afternoon at a firearms training center. the trainee is recovering after he was flown to the maryland shock trauma center. the student is under investigation. >> an update on the health condition of pope benedict. he will be retiring at the end of the month. a spokesman for the vatican said that the pope has been fitted with a pacemaker. several months ago he underwent surgery to have it replaced. when the pope steps down, he will remain in a monastery near the vatican but will have no dirty it -- duties with the church. >> the crippled vacation cruise liner will be towed to port. pictures of the carnival cruise

ship that broke down off the coast of mexico after the engine fire. passengers have told relatives that conditions on the ship are so poor with toilets overflowing, food supply is limited. the company's ceo offered an apology today. >> our promise to our guest is to provide a great vacation experience and we try hard to do that all the time. obviously, in this case, we did not deliver on that promise. >> despite some passengers reports that conditions are improving, there is an investigation into what is happening. carnival says it will offer passengers a free flight home and a full refund. a lot more than what they're getting there. >> a different vacation experience from what you would get. >> i promise, no big snowstorms tomorrow. no standing ovation? outside, look at our temperatures. it was spring fever with the high temperature near 60 degrees. i am confident there will not be any problems with road services. we can monitor road services with that strong sunshine. we are up to near 70 degrees. temperatures in washington 42 degrees. cold air up around the great lakes again. this little mini-storm will be producing a bit more light snow around new york and new england, the folks that do not need it. there is what is happening right now. here is our futurecast. tomorrow morning, it will be chilly. no rain tomorrow morning. here is the general area of rain with temperatures into the 30's. a bit of wet snow in the blue

area. as the storm begins to get organized off the coast, it does spread some snow into new england. at the tail end, we might see a dusting and some chilly air comes our way as we head into thursday. tomorrow morning, you get up no matter where you are gaithersburg fredrik, around washington, cloudy skies. the rain will arrive around the metropolitan area around noon. it will be rain. folks out in the mountains of west virginia, that will be the only area seeing some snow. even during tomorrow afternoon it will be a chilly rain if you are heading home. by the time you get to fredrik, you may see some wet snowflakes. as mild as it was today, if any of this leftover snow, and there will be some by 9:00 or 10:00 will be mainly on the grassy
